    Coming Soon: Mind-controlled Technology

    By admin | July 31, 2008

If you’ve read very far into this blog, you’re aware that one of the basic premises is that technology is racing ahead much faster than most people realize, and that the implications of this are profound.  Here’s one of those stories that just has to boggle your mind if you stop to reflect on it.

In Spring 2007 neuroscientists confirmed the ability of monkeys to remotely control a robotic arm through electrodes implanted in their brains.  With relative ease, the monkeys were able to direct the robot arm to feed themselves–simply by thinking about it.

Amazingly, this isn’t the first such experiment.  In fact, similar experiments have been conducted by highly reputable research facilities such as the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon, and Duke University going back to 2000! Each experiment used a different type of monkey and tested different skills.   In one experiment the monkey was able to control the movements of a humanoid walking robot!

But with each successive experiment the results were more pronounced and more reliable.  At this point it can be stated as a scientific fact that it is possible through technology to control the world around us simply through our mind.  Astounding!

One of the key concepts that many scientists are excited about is the next generation of prosthetics.  Soon amputees will no longer be stuck with clunky prostheses that only serve cosmetic purposes.  Instead, they will have powerful appendages that will enable them to do far more than they could before.   According to an article in Popular Mechanics,

In the years to come, this technology could lead to prosthetics that react perfectly to a user’s thoughts, or devices that move in ways we never imagined, responding to mental commands faster than our own bodies can.”

Now we’re talking about cyborgs.  Better.  Stronger.  Faster.

    But that’s just the start.

When my daughter was three or four I used to impress her by opening the sliding door of our minivan by inconspicuously touching the remote control in my pocket.  She thought it was magic.  Now she gives it no more thought than she does when she watches images on TV or talks to a person 1000 miles away on the cell phone.

If technology continues to progress at this rate (a big IF on this website) her children will take for granted being able to control household devices, vehicles, computers, robots, and who knows what other types of technology just by thinking about it.  With wireless transmitters attached to the electrode nets implanted in their brains, their environments will “magically” respond to their wishes.

You could really let your imagination run away with you.  If two people with–let’s call them “complants”–decided they wanted to communicate, why couldn’t it be a two way technology.  You think your thought that is interpreted and symbolized and then beamed wirelessly to your partner’s receiver.   Digital telepathy.  Why not?  It’s just a matter of further developing the technology, right?

So will this be a must-have technology in the future like cell phones are today?  Well, that seems pretty distant to me.  There will be bitter resistance among many people to the idea of physically jacking into this global network.   As with any new technology, younger people will inevitably lead the wave along with the technophile “early adopters”.   But the invasive nature and shear power of this technology will surely scare a wide segment of the population away from it.  And of course it is bound to be very expensive.  So for any foreseeable future, whis will again be a tool available only to a select few who essentially live a different reality from those living a more traditional life.

Will they use their vastly superior power to help the less fortunate?  Will they be heroes?  Or will they take advantage of their position to further extend their power?  Will they become so different from the common man that they simply don’t belong with the rest of society?  Will this technology become a wedge between the Homines Novi and the dinosaurs?

Well, if the world doesn’t end before then, we’ll find out soon enough.  Gonna be interesting.
