The “Agenda Theory”

When you think of conspiracies, do you imagine a dimly lit room deep in the heart of a vast country estate filled with a group of men chuckling in their leather chairs as the cigar smoke curls around their brandy snifters? Yeah, me too.
I’m sure there have been many such meetings over the centuries, and no doubt they are going on today. It’s obvious that some men of great power collude in private to manipulate events to their benefit, even if that manipulation leads to great harm or even death to many other people. For example, did such a meeting, or series of meetings take place among the Neocons to arrange the 9/11 atrocity? I wouldn’t rule it out. There is certainly evidence to indicate that something like that happened, and many people believe so fervently.
But I’m not going there in this article. I want to discuss something far more insidious than that–the “Agenda Theory”.
The premise is this: The collusion that makes the deepest impact on humanity happens every day, in the open, (or maybe in semi-private), by countless people all over the world without any kind of coordinated plan. These people share agendas. And though each one of them has their own unique set of agendas, there is a certain amount of overlapping and intertwining of individual agendas that result in a kind of collective behavior that tends to fulfill those agendas.
Of course, the primary motivation for all such agendas tends to be the accumulation of wealth, power, and security. But within the framework of these primary objectives are the intricacies of all the sub-agendas where individuals’ interests begin to interact with each others’.
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: It’s been at least 35 years since OPEC jerked the chain around United States’s neck and made it crystal clear that they controlled the flow of our nation’s oxygen supply. Since that time, our oil companies have not done the exploration that is supposed to justify their massive profits, our auto industry dove headfirst into SUVs, and our government has stubbornly refused to get behind any major form of alternative energy or conservation technology.
Was there a smoke-filled meeting back in the 70s where a bunch of men determined that they wanted to put our country in this position at this point in time? Are things in the process of working out just as they had planned? I don’t think so.
I think oil executives didn’t invest in exploration because it was going to result in less short-term profit and therefore less money in their individual pockets. I think auto executives saw that they could make much thicker margins on SUVs than on compact cars and there was higher demand, so it was a no-brainer for them. They profited greatly as individuals over the last few decades. And as for the government, well, we all know how that works. Politicians respond to money and votes, and votes are paid for through advertising, so it always comes down to cash.
People who circulate in common circles discuss their agendas casually over cocktails or a game of golf. They share information from the latest thought leaders. They influence each others’ ideas and opinions about ways to manage their affairs. And day by day, year after year, decision makers make decisions that benefit their personal interests. Gradually, inexorably certain classes of people shape the state of affairs in the world within their own spheres of influence.
Why is Agenda Theory so much more insidious than conspiracy theory? A group of people coordinating in secrecy on a specific plan to manipulate world events is inherently limited in its scope. Major plans that make a worldwide impact require many, many people to implement. The more people involved, the harder it is to keep the secret. If the plan really is sinister, then presumably keeping it secret is the first priority. So the need to keep their dark plots secret acts as a natural throttle on the scale of actual conspiracies.
But Agendas are different. There’s no need to keep them totally secret because it’s just business as usual. It’s just people making individual choices in their own best interests. Nothing wrong with that. It’s capitalism at work.
It just happens that the super rich people who sit on the boards of directors of major corporations have lots of common agendas. And those agendas often run counter to the agendas of the great masses of people who are in a different class.
For example, while the vast majority of people might want the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to come out with an affordable drug to treat Alzheimer’s, the few people who own significant shares of Pfizer stock would rather see it generate more profits. Those people are interested in warding off generic competition to Lipitor while the common folk are trying to figure out how to get meds more cheaply from Canada. No smoke-filled rooms–just people pursuing their own agendas.
Oh, and before we get too judgmental about those super-rich moguls benefiting themselves at the expense of society as a whole, let’s take a look at ourselves. How about the huge mortgage meltdown debacle? Who fueled that? Sure, there were a lot of unscrupulous mortgage lenders and real estate companies driving that along. But all those families who were willing to pay whatever the seller asked without even trying to negotiate and who took out exotic loans that they clearly couldn’t afford because they were convinced that real estate could only go up and up and could never go down–well, they all collectively caused the crisis. Whether people have huge power or just a little, they are driven by their own agendas. In order to enhance their own little world, they will sacrifice the world at large. Typically it’s not a fully conscious decision–they just aren’t looking beyond their own limited field of vision.
So while conspiracies large and small may be taking place as we speak, they are the tip of the iceberg compared to the vast Agenda Conspiracies profoundly shaping the future of our world. They can’t be identified because they are ubiquitous. They can’t be stopped because they are ingrained in human nature. And they are leading inexorably toward The End of Civilization As We Know It.
