The Republican Frankenstein’s Monster
By mentor24 | September 30, 2008
I’m fascinated by the dramatic disintegration of the Republican party over the credit bailout. It was just a few short years ago that they dominated the wimpy Democrats with ease, and now their brand equity is falling faster than, well, the stock market. How did this all go so wrong for them? Here’s how I see it:
The Republicans have two very distinct groups of constituents. First, there is the Wealthy Wing of the party–the money class. Their agenda is to ensure a free market that allows for the accumulation of wealth unfettered by the constraints of government oversight. Then there are the Main Street, or rather, the Oak Street Republicans. We’ll call this the Working Wing. Their agendas are primarily driven by social issues, such as right to life, gay marriage, and socialism in any form. (I know this is a gross generalization and Republicans vary in many ways, but I also think that these two groups represent major chunks of the party).
Now, while members of the Wealthy Wing of the party may be concerned about the social issues, their primary concerns are economic. And while the Working Wing may praise capitalism, most of them will never start a business and really benefit significantly from the economic policies that allow corporations to generate massive profits while shipping working class jobs overseas. But the GOP needs Working Wing’s votes to maintain power, so the people at the top of the party trumpet those ideals loud and clear to keep the working class folk bound to their party.
Now Barack Obama can’t get away with saying it because he’s running for office. But I’m not trying to get elected, so I’ll say boldly that the Republican party distracts bitter, downtrodden working class people with issues like guns, gays, and wait for it…. socialism.
Oh yes, the worst possible fate that could ever befall a nation. The Devil’s own system of government that is bound to lead to the ultimate destruction of the nation. The Republican leadership has been beating that drum so loud and so long that the party faithful are ever vigilant and ready to strike out at any sign of encroaching socialism.
So when President Bush, Hank Paulson, John McCain, and all the others who are clearly members of the party’s Wealthy Wing saw what was about to happen to a huge portion of their wealth when the markets plummeted, they couldn’t make a deal fast enough to let the government, (i.e. the public) shoulder the burden and risk for this deal.
But their Working Wing….ah, that was the Frankenstein’s monster they’d created that they could no longer control. In vast numbers and overwhelming proportions, they took up the chant to their representatives in congress: no socialism. No Socialism! NO SOCIALISM!!!
So here we are. Many a wealthy Republican is suffering tremendous loss of wealth today. They’ve been attacked by their own monster.
And in a few months the Democrats will rule the government.
Cue the Vampires!
