my question is will the msm fan the flames for war or will they give obama the same latitude they showed to bush. does the msm have its own agenda? we may find out.

Martini do your research before you dismiss facts.we HAVE in fact found OVER 300 planets orbiting other stars, although the authors comment that many resemble earths composition is untrue.however there have been a few found.
There is without a doubt in my mind thousands of life harbouring planets in our galaxy alone, maybe not so many with intelligent life...
One thing is certain, these are exciting times!

# martini Says:
December 30th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

"i don’t know where you got the information that we’ve found over 300 planets orbiting other stars when just a couple of weeks ago scientists announced that they found the first planets outside of our solar system. There are three of them and scientists said that their composition is related to that of Jupiter. Also, the particle colliers don’t and never will generate a black hole. To make a black hole you have to have a super massive star, many times the size of our own."

First of all, the first extrasolar planets were found years before your post, although you are right about most of them being gas giants. Maybe you are referring to the planets that have been found more recently that are more Earth-like in their composition?

Second, most of the physicists who will be using the LHC believe that they will actually create black holes, although they are supposed to disappear as quickly as they form. Supposedly they will be so small that they will evaporate due to "Hawking radiation".

Anyway, hopefully the Kepplar Telescope will help to resolve the question about other Earth like planets. I don't know if it will be as easy as lots of people think though. It would have to be in the habitable zone where water exists as liquid. It would have to be much smaller than any of the planets we have previously found (consider that on a planet only 10 times more massive than our own we would be crushed by its gravity). It should have some sort of rotation to keep one side from freezing and the other side from being scorched. We are not even certain that life would exist here on Earth if it weren't for our lucky partner the Moon.

At any rate, put all the things together that you need to sustain life and it seems more and more doubtful that we would find a habitable place very close to us. Don't get me wrong though, I am sure such a place exists. The universe is so vast that even if only .01% of all stars have a habitable planet or moon somewhere orbiting around them, and only .01% of all the possible habitable places around these stars are actually inhabited, you still get a shitload of life.

There is another thing the aliens could come to earth for: culture. I imagine a supremely advanced alien race might also be supremely bored, and a planets worth of myths and legends and art might occupy them for a while.

The aliens do exist, form all the knowledge I know and visual observation of our on planet,I believe we were made by aliens to one day serve them,in what capacity I have no clue.
Since we are part of the animal kingdom its obvious we are the uncommon species, example set up a test area fence it in and put 100 new born babies inside and observe them until they expire, because they will or in the same test field keep them alive until they can eat on there own and stop feeding them and observe until they expire. I think the results would show they must be taught the skills to survive and that awareness would be from a guardian or perhaps what we call god.
Man was brought to awareness not by evolution but by aliens either by direct crossbreeding or indirect by capture and DNA manipulation which seemingly appears as evolution to us.

Who's to say the aliens are more advanced than us? What if there's a planet of a species just going through its "caveman" stage of evolution? Or what if there's an entire solar system of planets with intelligent life, and they have no reason to search the rest of the universe?

It seems a little scary to me that humans would be the most intelligent life form in the universe.

It would be so cool if we blasted "DNA bombs" towards slower moving, earth-like planets. The species' would evolve faster there, compared to us, because of the difference in velocities (the slower you're moving, the faster time flows). An intelligent species could evolve there and we would have cousins to visit.
